The modern stage of the migration history of humankind implies that migrants are considered a resource for demographic and economic development, and economically developed countries are fighting for migrant human capital, designing and implementing various mechanisms to maximize the flow of migrants with characteristics that will contribute to the development of the host country. At the moment, Russia does not fully participate in this global competition, and the question of how to do this most effectively requires careful scrutiny of the extensive experience that economically developed countries have accumulated in this area. The aim of the article, therefore, is to describe exactly which migrants, on what grounds and through what mechanisms, have been attracted by the host societies starting from the second half of the 20th century. The article identifies five main types of migrants, which quite often become the object of interest of economically developed countries and, as a result, special efforts to attract them: «compatriots», «qualified migrants», «students», «temporary labor migrants» and «humanitarian migrants.» Each type is described in terms of what demand of the host society it can help to respond to and what tools are used to attract it, and is also illustrated by the example of one of the host countries working effectively with this type of migrants. In conclusion, the article discusses what measures can help Russia join the global competition for migration resources.
